If you want to put some serious colour into your painting, Quinacridone Magenta is hard to beat.

This is one of those colours that looks almost electric when it comes out of the tube. It’s bold, transparent and incredibly versatile—and a tiny amount can go a very long way.

Bright Without Being Heavy

Golden’s Quinacridone Magenta is a single-pigment, transparent colour made with PR122. Golden describes it as an excellent starting point for brilliant reds and pinks as well as fiery glazes.

That transparency is part of what makes it so useful.

Rather than sitting heavily on top of everything, it can create beautiful layers of colour and lets the colours underneath contribute to the final result.

A Little Goes a Long Way

Quinacridone Magenta is a very strong colour.

I’ve learned that I don’t need much of it when mixing. A small amount can dramatically change another colour, which makes it a surprisingly economical addition to a palette.

It’s particularly useful when I want to push a colour toward pink, red, violet or purple without making the mixture dull.

Gorgeous Reds and Pinks

One of my favourite things about Quinacridone Magenta is the range of reds and pinks I can create with it.

Add white and you can move into beautiful pinks. Mix it with warmer colours and you can create vibrant reds and coral-like colours. Combine it with blue and you can move into rich violets and purples.

It gives me options.

Fiery Glazes

Because it is transparent, Quinacridone Magenta is also wonderful for glazing.

A transparent layer can add a surprising amount of warmth and intensity without completely covering what is underneath.

This is especially useful when a painting needs a little more colour, warmth or punch.

Why It Has Become a Favourite

For colourful painting, I think Quinacridone Magenta is one of those colours that can completely change a palette.

  • Extremely vibrant

  • Transparent

  • Single-pigment colour

  • Excellent mixing colour

  • Beautiful for pinks and reds

  • Wonderful for purples and violets

  • Excellent for glazing

  • Excellent lightfastness

If you’re looking for a colour that can bring energy and intensity to your acrylic paintings, Golden Quinacridone Magenta is a colour I would definitely put on the palette.

And be warned—once you discover what this little bottle can do, you may wonder how you painted without it!
