Phthalo Blue (Green Shade) is one of those colours that looks innocent enough sitting on the palette—but wow, does it have some power!

It is an incredibly strong, versatile blue, and I love it for creating bright, clean colour and beautiful greens.

Powerful Colour

The first thing you need to know about Phthalo Blue is that a little goes a very long way.

Golden describes its Green Shade version as a powerful, versatile blue with a greenish bias. It is transparent and has excellent lightfastness.

That strength can take a little getting used to.

When I first started using colours like this, it was easy to accidentally add too much. Now I appreciate that a tiny dab can transform a much larger pile of paint.

Gorgeous Greens

One of my favourite uses for Phthalo Blue (Green Shade) is mixing greens.

Because it already leans toward green, it works beautifully with yellows to create everything from bright spring greens to deeper, richer foliage colours.

And when I want a really vibrant green, this is one of the colours I reach for.

Beautifully Transparent

Phthalo Blue is also fantastic when I want transparency.

Golden notes that although it is dark and opaque when used thickly, the pigment extends beautifully into glazes.

That makes it incredibly versatile.

I can use it strongly for a dark, dramatic blue or dilute it and use its transparency to build layers of colour.

It Can Transform a Palette

Another thing I love about Phthalo Blue is how much territory it can cover.

Mix it with yellow and I’m into greens. Mix it with magenta and I can move toward purples and violets. Add white and I can create lighter, brighter blues.

It’s almost like having several colours hiding inside one tube.

Why It Has Become a Favourite

Phthalo Blue (Green Shade) is powerful, vibrant and incredibly useful.

If you’re new to Phthalo Blue, start small—you really don’t need much!

But once you get comfortable with its strength, Golden Phthalo Blue (Green Shade) can become one of the most versatile colours on your palette.
