Why I love Burnt Umber Light Acrylic Paint

Every colourful palette needs a few quiet colours.

For me, Golden Burnt Umber Light is one of those quiet heroes.

It isn't bright or flashy. It doesn't jump out of the painting. Instead, it quietly does all the useful things that a good earthy colour should do.

Warm, Earthy and Versatile

Golden describes Burnt Umber Light as the lighter of its two Burnt Umber colours, with good opacity and the ability to extend and tint toward a warm to neutral beige.

That range is what makes it so useful.

It can be a rich brown straight from the tube, or it can become a much softer neutral when mixed with white or other colours.

A Wonderful Mixing Colour

I love using Burnt Umber Light when I want to create more natural-looking colours.

It can help take a colour down from something overly bright and create a more complex, earthy version.

It is especially useful in landscapes, buildings, animals, wood, skin tones and still life.

Great for Neutrals

One of my favourite things about earthy colours is that they can create beautiful neutrals without everything becoming grey.

Burnt Umber Light can move toward warm beige and neutral tones when mixed, giving me a much more interesting range than I might get by simply reaching for grey.

Good Coverage

It also has good opacity, which makes it useful when I want to establish a shape or cover an area without needing layer after layer.

That makes it a really practical colour—not just a beautiful one.

A Quiet Workhorse

Burnt Umber Light may not be the colour that catches your eye first when you're looking at a palette full of bright paints.

But once you start using it, you notice how often you reach for it.

  • Warm, earthy brown

  • Good opacity

  • Excellent for mixing neutrals

  • Can create warm beige tones

  • Useful for landscapes and still life

  • Wonderful for animals, wood and natural subjects

  • Excellent lightfastness

For me, Burnt Umber Light is one of those colours that quietly makes everything else on my palette more useful.

It may not be the star of the show—but every good cast of characters needs a few supporting players!
