Why I Love Alizarin Crimson Hue Acrylic Paint

There is something wonderfully moody about Alizarin Crimson.

It is deep, rich and romantic, and it can take a painting in a completely different direction depending on what you mix with it.

The version I use from Golden is Alizarin Crimson Hue, which is a modern formulation inspired by the traditional colour.

A Modern Take on a Classic

Golden’s Alizarin Crimson Hue is designed as a modern version of historical Alizarin Crimson.

Golden formulates it from a combination of quinacridone, nickel azo and phthalo pigments, creating a deep reddish-brown undertone while making it exceptionally lightfast.

That makes it particularly appealing to me as an acrylic painter.

I get the character I love about Alizarin Crimson without relying on the traditional fugitive pigment.

Deep and Rich

This is not a bright, cheerful red.

And that's exactly why I love it.

Alizarin Crimson Hue gives me those deep, sophisticated reds that are wonderful for shadows, dark flowers, rich fabrics, wine, berries and all sorts of other subjects.

It can add depth to a colour without simply turning it black.

Wonderful for Mixing

This is another colour that becomes really interesting when mixed.

Add white and you can move into beautiful muted pinks. Mix it with blues and you can create deep violets and purples. Mix it with warmer colours and you can create rich, complex reds.

It gives me a lot of options from one tube.

Beautiful Depth

I particularly like this colour when a painting needs a little more sophistication or depth.

It can be used sparingly to deepen a mixture or more strongly when I want a dramatic, dark red.

And because Golden's Hue formulation is exceptionally lightfast, I feel much more comfortable making it a regular part of my palette.

Why It Has Become a Favourite

Alizarin Crimson Hue is one of those colours I use when I want my painting to have a little more depth and mood.

  • Deep, rich red

  • Beautiful reddish-brown undertone

  • Excellent mixing colour

  • Wonderful for purples and pinks

  • Great for creating dark reds

  • Transparent

  • Exceptionally lightfast in Golden's Hue formulation

If you love the character of traditional Alizarin Crimson but want a modern acrylic formulation with excellent lightfastness, Golden Alizarin Crimson Hue is a beautiful colour to have on your palette.
